How to Handle a Hyperactive Child?

If your child is hyperactive, then it could be a sign that your child might be having the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD. Children having ADHD have trouble concentrating and staying in one place, in a way they do things without thinking of the results. Such kids have troubles at school and might find it difficult to make friends. ADHD is not acquired as it is something that a child is born with.

Here are some tips that can help you cope and handle a hyperactive child:

Hyperactive Child

Maintain Order

A lot of parents prefer to have a home without strict rules. This works well for children, however the hyperactive kids are more at ease if your home is more organised and orderly.

Avoid Battles

Decide which issues to bring up and fight for as most are owing to ADHD. It is hard to reason with such a child, who might be battling his own constraints. The best thing would be to stress on the important and avoid the rest.

Do Not Complicate Instructions

Children having ADHD have trouble remembering complicated instructions. Make sure that you simplify them and break down a complex task into bits.

Avoid Distractions

Try to keep your home as distraction-free as possible, especially in spaces like the study where the child needs to concentrate.

Positive Reinforcement

Completing a single task can be quite a struggle for such children. Therefore, praise and reward them on their success to reinforce that good achievement.

Developmental Milestone

Value the Child’s Independence

Children enjoy responsibilities and independence so involve them in what they need to do by helping them create their ‘to-do’ list.

Do Not Resort to Medication

There are ADHD kids that need medication for balancing out their brain chemistry, but they have side effects. Do not resort to medication if it can be avoided.

Provide Unstructured Time

Children need their own open space to run about and play in an unstructured environment. This is not possible in school, so ensure that your hyperactive child gets enough of time for unstructured play time.

Educate Yourself

It is important to be well-read in areas that pertain to your child’s ADHD disorder. Do a research from trustworthy sources and do not make impulsive decisions.
